Affirmative Action

In accordance with the new Jobs for Veterans Act, U.S. military veterans who received the Armed Forces Service Medal are now eligible for affirmative action consideration in employment and advancement. This new category joins Disabled Veterans, Campaign Badge Holders, and Recently Discharged Veterans as part of the university’s Affirmative Action Plan/Program for Veterans.

The Armed Forces Service Medal is a relatively new medal that is awarded to U.S. military personnel who participated as members of units involved in military operations of significant number with no foreign armed opposition, or the threat of imminent hostile action. In addition, the new law extends the Recently Discharged category to those veterans discharged from one year to three years after discharge.

Campaign Badge holders are those veterans who participated in a war, campaign, or expedition and were awarded a campaign badge for that period of service. Examples would be Vietnam Veterans, Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq, or Afghanistan veterans. Disabled Veterans are those who have a 30% or more disability rating from the Department of Veterans Administration, or were discharged due to an injury incurred in the line of duty.

Ohio State staff or faculty who are veterans of the U.S. military who have not already self-identified and wish to do so, are encouraged to contact Veterans Affairs or by completing the Veterans Self-Identification form.
